Light Pollution Map
Using Google Earth and the North American Light Pollution Map Overlay

| Notes: |
This is an aerial view of southern California and portions of Nevada, Arizona, and Utah using Google Earth. The large white area below and left of center is greater Los Angeles. I live about 4 miles east of the Los Angeles/San Bernardino county line in Ontario. Even though downtown Los Angeles is a good 40 miles away, the urban sprawl of Los Angeles means that the light pollution encompasses a huge area. To get decently dark skies requires at least a 1 hour drive from home—two hours is better (but still with a prominent light dome)—but a 3 hour drive can yield some very dark skies. See the the next map for a zoomed in view of the area around our house.
