Improved Declination Indicator |
|
 |
 |

The Declination indicator on the left fork is nearly useless because it's black (difficult to see at night, even with a red light) and doesn't extend to the numbers on the indicator disc (leading to innacurate readings).
To make the indicator more legible, follow these instructions:
- Gather these items: Scotch tape, silver spray paint (or a small bottle of silver model paint), and 2 or 3 wood toothpicks.
- Remove the hub on the left fork arm by grabbing it firmly and turning anti-clockwise. Remove the indicator disc. You can leave the plastic fork arm cover in place for the rest of the procedure.
- Use the Scotch tape to mark off the area to be painted. In this case that area is the existing arrow as well as a thin line extending toward the indicator disc. Be careful to ensure the tape is pressed firmly against the plastic and that the line is thin.
- Spray some silver spray paint onto a large piece of non-absorbant paper. Spray it for about 5 seconds in one spot so that it forms a pool. Disregard this step if you are using paint from a bottle.
- Dab the end of a toothpick in the pool of silver paint and apply it to the exposed area between the pieces of Scotch tape.
- Allow the paint to dry for 10-15 minutes.
- Apply another coat of paint in the same manner.
- Wait another 10-15 minutes for the second coat of paint to dry.
- CAREFULLY remove the Scotch tape.
- Replace the indicator disc and the hub, taking care to orient the disc so that it is accurate.
- Check the indicator disc as you tighten the hub. It has a tendency to move as you tighten the hub.
You should now have a nice, silver arrow and thin line pointing directly to the marks on the indicator disc. It is easy to see at dusk or under the light of a red flashlight.
